We hope your families are staying safe and have several softball updates to pass on to you relating to upcoming events. 

Fall Ball:

We are planning to have a fall season and sign-ups are expected to start on/about 23 June and continue through 19 July.  Teams will then be formed the following week and we expect to notify players of what team they are on by 28 July.  Practices will then begin on 1 August and we currently project the fall season will begin on 22 August with seven weeks of Saturday games concluding on 10 October.   No games will be played on Labor Day weekend.

We plan to have girls register for the age group they will play next spring (2021).  Our logic for going this route despite not having a spring season is that fall is the time for development.  Standings are not kept and teams have more practices in the fall than the spring.  While there will be some growing pains in the fall for girls moving up to the next division, this is to be expected and we have enough experience to strongly recommend staying with this practice to make the spring competitive season more enjoyable.  Despite our recommendation, moving up may be waived if the parent chooses. 

We will need coaches at the following age groups: 8u, 10u, 12u, and 15u.  We can only support registered players based on having enough coaches at each age level.  Any questions may be directed to the directors for the respective age groups ([email protected] or [email protected].

Meteor Evaluations:

We expect to have most, if not all details, for the 2021 Meteor evaluations by the end of June.  This will include the evaluation schedule and the process being used for finalizing teams.  Meteors are for girls at the 10U, 12U, 14U, and potentially HS level who demonstrate higher-level playing abilities and want to play a longer schedule that typically extends into mid-July and includes winter training.  We originally planned to have evaluations during July like most other districts who also field A-teams.  However, with recreation softball being cancelled this spring, we felt the right thing to do during this unusual year is to allow girls to play during the fall and participate in any clinics to help prepare them for the Meteor evaluations.  Therefore, we have a preliminary window of 15-27 September for this year’s evaluations.  Again more details will be forthcoming in the next couple weeks.  Any questions may be directed to [email protected].

Player Clinics:

We hope to start having player clinics by early to mid-July that will allow girls to refresh and improve their softball skills in advance of the fall season and Meteor evaluations.  While we are committed to facilitating these clinics, we will need volunteers who are background checked to step up and assist board members for this to happen.  There are extensive requirements from the City of Mason and MYO to ensure any activities occurring on Mason fields are aligned with safety guidelines.  We continue to adapt based on the current Aftershock and Meteor teams that are playing and the lessons learned by observing how other districts are ensuring everyone’s safety.  Any questions may be directed to[email protected] or [email protected] .

MYS Board Membership:

We welcome anyone interested in serving on the 2020-2021 MYS Board to attend future meetings in advance of the 14 September MYS Board election.  We have a couple current board members who are moving on.  They have given countless hours to the betterment of our softball youth and we need new people who are committed to serving the girls’ interests first and foremost and are willing to give time to execute the duties of their position.  You will get help from other board members and will not be asked to do anything without support.  We particularly need committed members of younger girls who will be able to potentially stay with the organization.  If you have any questions, please reach out to any MYS Board member.
