In Memoriam: Rusk & Lassiter

Vienna Little League mourned the loss of two legendary former coaches in 2022: Alvin "Big Al" Lassiter and Frank Rusk.

Contemporaries as coaches in the 1970s and 1980s, and co-inductees into the VLL Honor Roll in 1978, Al and Frank mentored hundreds of Vienna children, and served VLL for decades. Al died on November 6 at age 89 and Frank died on Christmas Day at age 80.

Al's service to VLL included coaching the Majors Giants and several successful All-Star teams.

In 1983, Al and Frank were both coaches for the VLL team that came one run away from earning a berth in the Little League World Series, as Southeast Regional Runners-Up.

Frank was coach for the Majors Pirates from 1975 through 1988. From 1975 to 1979, he was also the League's quartermaster, responsible for purchasing and maintaining the equipment used in the league. Frank was probably best known to VLL players for his ability to teach them how to hit. He also devoted many hours toward the maintenance of Yeonas Park. In 1975, Frank received the VLL President's Award for outstanding service to the league.

VLL sends its sincere condolences to both the Lassiter and Rusk families.
